Ms. Slater is in her ninth year teaching at Marble Hill and her fourteenth year teaching. She began her teaching career at the Bronx Dance Academy, a middle school, teaching American history. She then taught Global Studies at the Richard R. Green High School for Teaching in Manhattan. Ms. Slater has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Williams College, a Master's Degree in Public Affairs from Princeton University, and a Master's Degree in Social Studies Education from City College. Before becoming a teacher, Ms. Slater directed an after-school program in Queens. Ms. Slater also worked for an international development organization based in Washington, DC and spent extended periods of time in South and Southeast Asia including Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand. Ms. Slater has also traveled in South America and Europe. In 2016, Ms. Slater was selected as one of 30 teachers nationwide to attend the Constitutional Scholars Institute sponsored by the National Constitution Center and the Rendell Center in Philadelphia. Ms. Slater had the opportunity to learn about the Constitution and the presidency from top scholars in the field and to visit the Constitution Center and Independence Hall. In 2015, Ms. Slater was selected as one of 60 teachers nationwide to attend the Supreme Court Institute for Teachers sponsored by Street Law and the Supreme Court Historical Society and was honored to meet Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor as well as attorneys who have argued cases before the Supreme Court. Ms. Slater enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, cycling, camping, experimenting with technology, and spending time with her husband, son who is in eleventh grade, and daughter who is in fifth grade.
